The Flying Eye Hospital joins Boeing at the Seattle Museum of Flight

July 2018

The Flying Eye Hospital has touched down at Boeing Field, Seattle and will be open for public tours on on the weekends of 28th and 29th July and 4th and 5th August. We have a longstanding partnership with Boeing and are thrilled to be able to showcase the plane to Boeing staff who have worked so hard to help get this project off the ground.

Thanks to the help of partners such as Boeing the Flying Eye Hospital has been fighting blindness in communities around the world since 1982. We have operated three Flying Eye Hospital aircrafts that are all part of the Boeing heritage. The first was a Douglas DC-8, the second a DC-10. Boeing has played a crucial role in decisions such as retiring the DC-10, and providing engineering and modifications to turn a former FedEx MD-10 cargo plane into our third-generation flying hospital.

The plane will briefly be stateside to refuel, restock and showcase its work to the public, having just returned from training projects in Peru and Barbados. The crew will be preparing for a training project in Mongolia and a milestone visit to Ethiopia, celebrating 20 years of working in the country.

About the Flying Eye Hospital:

The Flying Eye Hospital is the state-of-the art, fully accredited world’s only ophthalmic teaching hospital on board an MD-10 aircraft. It features a 46-seat classroom, laser room, operating room, instrument sterilization room, and pre and post operative care room.

The aircraft is fully equipped with technology that can transmit live surgery lectures around the world in 3D via Cybersight, our telemedicine training and mentorship platform for eye care teams around the world. This year, the Flying Eye Hospital has also introduced a new mobile simulation training program that uses life-like eyeballs to train new doctors to perform the most delicate of corrective eye surgeries. This cutting-edge technology enables our expert Volunteer Faculty to train more doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals - ultimately restoring vision for more people.
