Orbis in India

Following multiple Flying Eye Hospital programs, Orbis identified India as a priority country and established an office in Delhi in 2000.

1988

Orbis began its sight saving initiative in India through its Flying Eye Hospital (FEH). The FEH came to Hyderabad and New Delhi for its first ever program in the country!

2000

And then in 2000, Orbis began its country program in India and established an office in New Delhi.

2001

Soon, Orbis identified childhood blindness and corneal blindness as priority areas in India.

2002

And in 2002, Orbis India's flagship program, India Childhood Blindness Initiative (ICBI), was launched.

2004

The first Children's Eye Center (CEC) at Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital, Delhi was established in 2004. It was also in this year that we co-founded Vision 2020 India.

2005-2013

In this period, Orbis established three Pediatric Ophthalmology Learning and Training Centers and our network of CECs grew to 30 centers across 17 states. In addition, Orbis strengthened the concept of a hospital-based corneal retrieval program on a national level, which was instituted in more than a dozen hospitals in India.

2014

Building on Orbis’ work in Quality Assurance at eye hospitals, a Quality Resource Center was established at Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital in Delhi in 2014 which is now supporting other eye care facilities across India and internationally in Bangladesh, Vietnam and Indonesia.

2016

Beginning with the launch of the REACH (Refractive Error Among Children) program across the country, Orbis went ahead with developing CBA (Competency Based Assessment Rubrics) with its network of partners. It also published a comprehensive guide for ophthalmologists and the eye care fraternity - 'Preferred Practices in Pediatric Ophthalmology for India'.

2017

From its first CEC in 2004, Orbis came a long way and established 32 CECs in India by 2017! Every year, these centers reach over a million children across the country.

2019

Orbis, along with Siliguri Greater Lions Eye Hospital, launched the Green Vision Center initiative and inaugurated the 33rd Children's Eye Center at Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital in Mastichak, Bihar

2020

Orbis conducted its very first Virtual Flying Eye Hospital (FEH) Program during the pandemic. A Sandwich Fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology was also conducted.
