Equipped with state-of-the-art wet lab, artificial eyes, and virtual reality set up, Orbis and PBMA’s H.V. Desai Eye Hospital inaugurate a Digital Training Hub at PBMA’s H.V. Desai Eye Hospital, Pune.

Orbis, in partnership, PBMA’s H.V. Desai Eye Hospital inaugurated a Digital Training Hub at PBMA’s H.V. Desai Eye Hospital, Pune. Taking the next step training and capacity building of eye health professionals, the Digital Training Hub (DTH) provides access to simulation training, tele-mentorship, hands-on training, and more to accelerate ophthalmic care capacity.

Equipped with state-of-the-art wet lab, artificial eyes, and virtual reality set up, the DTH operates with an experienced faculty at the helm. It combines digitization, simulation, tele-mentorship, tele-education, and telemedicine with in-person hands-on training to enhance the capacity of ophthalmologists, ophthalmologists-in-training, ophthalmic nurses, and anesthesiologists in the eye care department.

Along with innovation and access, we also need empathy and care in the medical field which I am delighted to witness here.

The DTH offers Sandwich Fellowships, Observerships, Hospital Based Trainings, to provide training in clinical and surgical skills, problem solving, crisis management, etc., through a blended learning approach. The Remote Surgical Mentorships provide a unique opportunity to seek mentorship from global experts during live ophthalmic surgeries. The simulation training enables training on glaucoma, cataract, strabismus, diabetic retinopathy, etc. using artificial eyes.

Developing a cadre of trained eye health professionals to deliver quality eye care across remains at the heart of Orbis’s endeavor toward combating avoidable blindness. The DTHs can transform the eye care ecosystem by equipping these professionals with critical skillset to deliver quality treatment to the patients.

The DTH also leverages Cybersight – Orbis’s telemedicine platform to deliver courses, webinars, virtual case discussions, and connecting ophthalmic professionals with experts from across the globe. Sandwich fellowships with rotations and observerships also invite eye health professionals to undertake wet lab and hands-on training and clinical observation and management and then practice at their home institutions, further bridging the gap in access to medical education.

The novelty of an initiative such as the DTH lies in its innovation in leveraging technology to refine the skills and expose the eye health professionals to cases that encourage their critical thinking. This empowers them to save sight within their communities by strengthening the network of eye professionals across the country.
